Scrub Jay

In my days as a wildlife rehabilitator at Portland Audubon, I learned that scrub jays (Aphelocoma californica)—no matter how sick or injured—are fierce and cocky to their core. I held many in my hands, force feeding and medicating them until they were well enough to be released back to the wild. And they’d always bite hard.
