About

In 2016, I created my third colored pencil drawing ever — and the first in almost 25 years.

I chose artists’ colored pencils because they lets me clearly portray the details of an animal and its expression — those details you can only see when you are very close to an animal, when you hold it in your hands.

You see, in my 20s, I lived and worked with nature and wildlife at an intimate and personal level: rehabilitating sick and injured wildlife at Portland Audubon, reintroducing peregrine falcons in the Rockies, teaching environmental education at Portland’s Outdoor School, and guiding backcountry llama packing trips in Yellowstone country. I spent many, many miles and nights in the wild places of the West.

That seems so long ago, yet the memories and emotions of those moments will not leave me. My drawings come from those moments, and especially from those indelible feelings.
